The rose has a long, ancient history as a symbol of secrecy. The Latin phrase sub rosa (New Latin for “under the rose”), denotes secrecy or confidentiality and is used in English to denote secrecy or confidentiality, similar to the Chatham House Rule. In ancient mythology, Cupid gave a rose to Harpocrates, the god of silence, to keep him from telling about the indiscretions of Venus. Since ancient times, the rose has often been associated with secrecy.

Sub rosa literally means “under the rose” in New Latin.

Even then, the game's heyday was almost ten years ago around Alpha 25. Don't buy it, if you wanted to buy it and get a worthwhile experience you missed your chance a couple years ago. At this point, this game is abandoned by the dev and a vast majority of the players. Sub Rosa is easily the most critically acclaimed game he has made, most fleshed out, and the only one that's been relatively commercially successful. Alex Austin already has a string of failed and abandoned game projects to his name. Just driving from Sub Rosa with more crashes. No local voice chat, no getting out of vehicles, not guns, no business management, no cutting deals with rivals. He is also apparently creating a 2D MMO Skateboarding game concurrently as he makes Stunt Derby, which I'm sure will be yet another one of the many Steam Early Access multiplayer games that unfortunately launch dead on arrival.Īs far as I can tell, Stunt Derby is just the racetrack from Sub Rosa's map or something similar, the vehicles from Sub Rosa, and physics objects as obstacles on the track, without vehicle damage to spice things up like Flatout or Wreckfest. If his new game sells well, why would he even have the incentive to continue updating Sub Rosa? Wouldn't most people who are fans of Sub Rosa move onto the new game since its using SR's base driving model? This is at the worst a flat-out lie that he has no plans on following through with, a man attempting to make his next game a success by manipulating desperate fans, or at best, Alex overpromising and underdelivering yet again.

He hasn't put out an update in two years, yet says on Twitter IF his next game, Stunt Derby (another early access physics title), sells well he will update Sub Rosa. The vast majority of the influx of new players that came with the wider release are long-gone. Even then, its typically one server with less than 60 people, more commonly under 30. This game's servers are dead most times of the day and night, except for maybe weekends and after school when all the kids get online. Alex teased updates on twitter a couple years ago of new cars and weapons, but they still have yet to be released. Alex finally allows it to come up on the search in 2021, the game sells many many more copies judging by the windfall of reviews that came after that date, and then he just doesn't do anything with it for two years. If you searched for it on the Steam search, it wouldn't come up. This game used to be only able to be purchased via a link to the Steam page.

That's pretty bad in and of itself for an early access game. I don't even think he has updated Sub Rosa since it got a wide release on Steam in early 2021.

Oddly enough some of these are on Steam early access, and haven't been updated in half a decade. Prior to SR he has mainly created tech demos, a 2D platformer, and a golf game. If you don't want to interact with strangers, this game will suck.Īlex Austin, the lead dev and afaik the only person working on this game, gave up on Sub Rosa a few years ago. If you don't have a mic, this game will suck. As new players try to figure the game out they are usually quickly turned off by a complete lack of any kind of explanation as to how the game works, hostile long-time players, or just boredom. The most popular servers for the past four years or so have been a constant revolving door of largely the same few hundred people, with new players lasting probably less than ten hours. Fun times could be had if you met the right people. Join a criminal organization, make deals with other organizations, have mad banter with random lads, and drive around bumping tunes via Soundpad. Game was never mind-blowing, but it's a unique concept that still hasn't been done better afaik.
